Learning To Drive (Cars)

As soon as you reach your 17th birthday you will be eligible for a provisional driving licence. When you decide to start to learn to drive you must display red 'L' plates on the back and the front of the vehicle you are going to be driving.
The person that takes you out for lessons must be over the age of 21 and have held a full EU licence for three years or more.
To get a provisional driving licence you will have to fill out form D1, this is available from the post office or you call call the DVLA on 0870 240 0009. You are unable to start driving until you receive this licence.
Before you take your practical driving test, you will also have to take a theory exam, this is to test what you know about driving theory.

If you are considering buying your own vehicle, here are some extra costs you need to think about:

  • Should the vehicle be petrol or diesel (or possibly gas)
  • Road Tax (this varies according to the vehicle model/engine size)
  • Insurance (shop around for quotes)
  • MOT (this is a yearly test that a vehicle has to pass to prove it is still roadworthy)
  • Maintenance costs (new tyres, oil, servicing costs etc)

Note: it is against the law to drive your vehicle without tax, insurance or if it has failed the MOT.
