Connexions Good News Stories

"I have found a New Path" - Simon Lovell

Simon came into a Connexions Centre in February 2010 hoping to find an alternative career, after leaving the Army. During his interview with Personal Advisor Anthony Williams, Simon identified that he was interested in a number of possible career choices including a career in the sports industry.

In March Simon started an E2E course at Rathbone in Tipton which included taking part in the Level 2 Sports Leaders Award with Transition Through Sport.

During the course Simon worked intensively with Claire Anderson (Transition Through Sport Co-ordinator) and Chad Smith (Connexions Personal Adviser). Simon demonstrated his enthusiasm and natural ability very quickly to become successful within the sports industry.

The only thing that was missing for Simon was confidence in his own ability. Claire and Chad supported Simon to overcome this through the work at Transition Through Sport, which led to him becoming a very confident young leader.

Whilst on the project Simon identified what areas of the sports industry he would like to work in and what support he felt he needed to be able to move forward and gain employment. this included help with application forms and interview techniques.

Through partnership work with transition Through sport and Sandwell Leisure Trust, Simon had the opportunity to complete his NARS Life Guard qualification. Simon went above and beyond to ensure he passed, completing extra training sessions to improve his swimming and knowledge.

Through effective partnership working, Sandwell leisure Trust confirmed they would offer all the young people who passed the NARS course an interview for the Casual Life Guard Vacancies that were being advertised at the time.

Simon gained support, advice and guidance from Chad to enhance his employability skills; working on interview techniques, CV writing, completing application forms and covering letters.

Since completing Transition Through Sport Simon applied for the Casual Life Guard position with Sandwell Leisure Trust and successfully gained sessional employment. Simon did not stop there, he continues to attend his E2E course at Rathbone as well as gaining a part time position at BM Stores. Simon has now applied for and been successful in gaining a place at Dudley college on a Gym Instructors course starting in September.

Simon's quote "I dey know where to start........with Transition Through Sport and Connexions help i have found a new career path."

Katie Gailey

Katie is a school leaver who due to various issues including bullying had not been at school since the beginning of year 10 and has been educated at home.

Katie and her mother came into the Wednesbury Connexions Centre in May 2010 to talk about her options for September. Both mum Karen and Katie were extremely worried as katie has not sat her GCSE results and had not been in school for nearly two years. Katie however, had a strong interest in finding a career in hairdressing or travel & tourism. after much discussion and guidance Katie recognised that she had many skills other than academic ones and through several sessions looking at employability skills and confidence building, Katie started to apply for courses at colleges and training providers.

Katie attended an assessment at Peter Pyne where she passed at Level 2 with flying colours. They put her in touch with an employer who offered her a position straight away with a view to start her hairdressing apprenticeship in July 2010.

Katie says "If I had not come into the Connexions Centre I dont think that I would have gained this apprenticeship. Emma gave me all my options; she was very realistic with me but encouraged me to go for what I wanted to and helped me see I am capable of anything as long as I put work into it. As I had not had a very good time at school and not sat my exams i doubted myself a lot, but Connexions helped me to overcome this and go for what I wanted to and I am extremely happy."

Mum Karen says "I am so grateful to Emma and the staff at the Connexions Centre. Emma has done more for Katie in a few months than anyone did for two years for her and I am over the moon with the help that she has received, I cannot thank you enough."

Ella'ver Transformation Lands Tipton Teen Award

A young woman whose truanting meant she missed half of her time at high school won one of Britains leading educational awards.

Reformed Ella Wallage got national charity Rathbone's vote as their Apprenticeship of the Year 2009 and travelled to the Houses of Parliament on October 20th to receive her honour.

And the Tipton teen - who features in a short film about her life recently - was also saluted as example of how mentoring can motivate troubled young people by author Fran Abrams, who premiered a two-year study called Learning to Fail: How Society Lets Young People Down, at the prestigious event.

Now a full-time nursery nurse in Dudley, things couldn't be looking brighter for effervescent youngster, Ella. But skip back a couple of years and the strain of caring for her family from an early age plus peer pressure to bunk off and get into trouble threatened to quash Ella's undoubted promise.

"Ella was really depressed when she first came to Rathbone" said Sue Price, Centre manager for the training charity in Walsall. "High School had been an unhappy experience and Ella had tried hairdressing at college but never really settled. She needed individual attention, some time to sort her issues out and an employer who would give her the opportunity to prove herself. That's exactly what she got"

A spell on the entry to employment course at the Rathbone centre in Sandwell helped Ella improve her numeracy and literacy and brush-up her CV. She then moved on to the charity's base in Walsall where she began a Level 2 Apprenticeship in child care.

Bosses at the Treetops Day Nursey on Manderston Close continued to nurture her talents on work placement and were so impresses by Ella's progress that they took her on full time.

"Something just clicked when I got there" said Ella, I knew I had to get my head down or I'd be off. The staff at Treetops and Rathbone were very supportive and I began to work through my problems."

Ella's experience was highlighted at the awards event as journalist and writer Fran Abrams explained how encouragement from significant adults can dramatically alter the course of many young peoples' lives.

Rathbone will also be calling on every one from multi-national companies to privately-owned nursery schools to offer young people a taste of the workplace - or risk losing a generation to unemployment and despair.

"Young people are finding it very difficult to compete in the job market against those who have been recently made redundant and have many years of experience behind them" said Fiona King, Director for Rathbone. "What Treetops has offered Ella has proved life-changing. Other businesses could and should follow their example."

Neil Clenton - Age 18 - Sandwell Enterprise Development Agency (SWEDA)

Neil is from Stone Cross, West Bromwich. Although he left Menzies High School with no qualifications, he had aspirations to work within ICT.

Neil would readily admit that, as a pupil, he was easily led and often found himself in trouble. This resulted in short-term exclusions from school. Worried about his future, Neil visited Connexions and worked with Personal Advisers to find out about opportunities that were available to him. He gained a place with the training provider, Performance Through People, and successfully completed an NVQ in Business Administration and the EDCL computing qualification. As part of his placement Neil gained valuable work experience at a LearnDirect Centre.

Despite Neil's hard work, he was unable to find a job at the end of his training and spent a while out of employment but did not give up. He continued to work with Connexions to amass his skills and improve his CV. He then attended Sandwell Enterprise Development Agency (SWEDA) to develop his CV. Management at SWEDA were very impressed by Neil's energy and enthusiasm, and he was offered a volunteer work placement, where he assisted within the ICT suite. Neil continued to gain further qualifications while there, including accredited qualifications in First aid, Health & Safety, Numeracy and Literacy Level 2.

Neil's positive attitude towards his work ensured he became a valued member of SWEDA's team. He was offered a permanent position not only managing the ICT suite, but also working in a supportive role on other young people-related projects, including Reach Out.

With the help of a Personal Adviser, Neil is now working towards an NVQ in Advice & Guidance. He is employed as a Support Worker on the Entry 2 Learning Project, a specialist development programme for 16 and 17 year olds.

While working for SWEDA Neil was chosen by Microsoft to feature in its development work for their digital services and at a Microsoft launch event in Birmingham, where he met and spoke with the Prime Minister, Gordon Brown.

Kirsty Holloway - Age 18 - Raising Aspirations Programme

Kirsty is a young mother with a child under two years old. She had many difficulties throughout her school life, including severe attendance issues which Kirsty felt were not dealt with effectively by school staff. However, despite not really connecting with most of her education, Kirsty really enjoyed her childcare lessons and knew from early on this was the area where she wanted to work.

Connexions have worked closely with Kirsty since 2005 at school, as part of the TEAM project and during the Raising Aspirations programme. The TEAM project targeted young people like Kirsty to reconnect with learning in a variety of different environments, while the Raising Aspirations programme was introduced to elevate the aspirations of vulnerable young people in Sandwell, especially pregnant teenagers, teenage parents and young fathers.

In 2007, Kirsty was referred to the Raising Aspirations programme. Throughout her pregnancy she met regularly with Connexions staff, but was not ready to engage in any positive activity. Even long after the birth of her baby, Kirsty still found it difficult to commit to any opportunity presented to her, but Connexions Personal Advisers continued to support her.

Kirsty's motivation changed after attending the Raising Aspirations Speak Out Conference, which involved young people experiencing a range of occupational areas, including childcare, painting & decorating and catering. She used her time well, talking to course tutors and young people, and found her passion for learning had been rekindled along with her earlier ambition to work within childcare.

During a visit to her home Kirsty suggested to her Personal Adviser that she now felt ready to move on and to begin her career in childcare. She believed her change in attitude was a direct result of attending the conference and the continued support she had received.

Kirsty is now at Nacro Training and has a dedicated childcare learning pathway. She remains successfully engaged with her course, and is looking forward to her work placement in the creche at Sandwell Council House. Kirsty's motivation has gone from strength to strength and she has recently contributed her views of services to young people to Sandwell Council's Scrutiny Panel.

Rochelle Gayle - Age 19 - From NEET to EET
Most of Rochelle's life was spent in Birmingham. She sadly lost her mum when she was quite young and went to live with extended family. In 2006, when she was a Year 11 pupil, Rochelle moved to Wednesbury. This was quite a shock as she had to leave her High School and start over again. She knew very few people in the Wednesbury area and it proved difficult getting into a new school.

Rochelle sought out Connexions herself and came into the centre to get help finding a school. Personal Advisers worked tirelessly to find her a place and after some time Rochelle was eventually admitted to Stuart Bathurst School. However, as Year 11 had now commenced, Rochelle was unable to attend classes in school and was put on an alternative curriculum. The frustration of not being at school began to affect her confidence, self-esteem and attitude. Connexions continued to support Rochelle, meeting with her regularly and engaging her within positive activities such as Transition Through Sport, Career Club and Self Development Workshops. A placement at Nacro was organised to do childcare, though full commitment was lacking.

As well as coping with getting back on track with her education, Rochelle found it increasingly more difficult to deal with her issues and she would often feel very demotivated and angry with her life. Continued problems at home meant the support from Connexions played a crucial role in keeping her focused, raising her spirits and preventing her total disengagement. Rochelle was assisted to apply for and secured a place to study Childcare Level 1 at Sandwell College. Connexions has worked with her and her family to alleviate the pressures at home. At the end of the year and after a struggle, Rochelle successfully completed the Childcare course and enrolled for a Level 2 in Health & Social Care.

As things continued to deteriorate at home, it was mutually agreed with Rochelle and her family that she should move out. Connexions worked with the local authority to secure supported accommodation, where Rochelle received help with developing life skills.

Things went well at first on her new course at college, but Rochelle's choice of friends had a negative impact on her and her studies. She could not continue despite intervention by her Personal Adviser. Encouraged to stay in learning, Rochelle was submitted to Juniper Training for E2E. It was while at Juniper that Rochelle made great strides. Despite her sometimes difficult and challenging behaviour, tutors at the centre stuck with her and helped her to channel her negative energy into poetry - a medium Rochelle used to help her make sense of her life. Her basic skills levels improved and she learned to focus on her work.

In July 2009, Juniper awarded Rochelle with the award of Most Academically Improved Learner. Rochelle was over the moon about this and finally had some recognition for the many struggles she had gone through to stay in learning.

Rochelle is now working hard at Walsall College studying Media and is living independently in her own flat.

Jamie Edwards - Age 16 - From Exclusion to College

Jamie's experience of school was not a positive one. After being excluded he had difficulties finding another school placement. As a consequence of his exclusion, he was unable to sit for his GCSEs, leaving school with no qualifications.

Jamie was referred to Connexions by Sandwell Youth Offending Team. He was keen to help address his offending behaviour and committed himself to training or work opportunities.

Initially Jamie's main focus was to find a job. But after taking advice from his Personal Adviser he realised the need to address his basic skills. Working hard to address specific issues and to identify his aspirations, an action plan was developed to help move Jamie forward. Jamie decided he wanted to go through the college route to gain his qualifications. He was given full support throughout the application and interview process.

After a few setbacks Jamie attended a successful interview at Sandwell College, enrolling on Sports & Leisure Studies (Level 1). He was delighted at securing a place, especially as he had been out of education for over 12 months.

Jamie continues to do well and enjoy his course at college. His confidence has grown and he now is motivated to improve his qualifications and skills by progressing to Level 2 and 3.

Sandwell Engineering Diploma - Learner Profile
Chelsea Ryan, Yr 10 Student, Manor Foundation Business Enterprise and Sports College

Chelsea is currently studying on the Sandwell Engineering Diploma course. Speaking at Menzies City Learning Centre, where she and her classmates were benefiting from the CLC's cutting-edge IT resources, Chelsea said,
"The most important reason I chose this course is because when I leave school I'm hoping to join the Royal Navy as an electrical engineer. The Diploma in Engineering course will give me an understanding of the wide range of different types of engineering, for example.....chemical engineering, civil engineering, geotechnical engineering and mechanical engineering. I also picked this course as an option because I wanted to prove to my friends, family and the other lads on this course that engineering isn't a male job."

Sandwell's Engineering Diploma students also undertake classes at Sandwell college.
Sandwell College, Smethwick campus has a long tradition of excellence in engineering.
